Following the dominant-floristic approach to vegetation, 4 associations of subarctic and/or subalpine Siberian larch open woodlands with 7 subassociations and 3 variants were distinguished in the North-Eastern part of European Russia. The most common lichen and feathermoss woodland syntaxa, Stereocaulo-Cladino-Laricetum (L.) armerietosum (on marine sands of the Boreal transgression) and betuletosum nanae var. Vaccinium myrtillus, also Hylocomio-Betulo nani-L. typ. (on glacial deposits or rock debris) are observed from the North-Eastern Europe to the Putorana Plateau foothills. The herb-rich and peatmoss woodlands, Bistorto-Geranio-L. anthoxanthetosum and Sphagno-Betulo nani-L., also Hylocomio-Betulo nani-L. rubetosum (mountain alderherb-feathermoss woodlands in the river valley slope bottoms), are known to grow in the Urals and the West-Siberian north. The last 4 syntaxa are restricted to the Polar and Sub-Polar Urals. Such are: Stereocaulo-Cladino-L. betuletosum nanae var. typ. (on different types of rock in the mountains) and var. Carex rupestris (on peridotites along the alpine timberline), Bistorto-Geranio-L. calamagrostietosum (herb-rich woodlands on floodplain sands) and avenelletosum (the same on silicate rock debris along the alpine timberline). From the zonal point of view, only herb-rich woodlands of BistortoGeranio-L. avenelletosum and anthoxanthetosum and dwarfbirch-moss-lichen stands of Stereocaulo-Cladino-L. betuletosum nanae var. Vaccinium myrtillus penetrate into the southern belt of the northern taiga subzone. All the rest of the larch woodland syntaxa is restricted to the northernmost (subarctic) belt of the latter, thus providing its delimitation in the study area.
