These changes have coincided with large scale climatic and oceanographic changes in the North Atlantic between the mid 1960's and the 1970's. The anchovy has withdrawn from Galician coastal waters and the western part of cantabria in parallel with a trend to cooler conditions. One supposes that this zone forms a dynamic frontier for the expansion of this species on account of the cooler habitat to the west influenced by upwelling. The withdrawal to the eastern part of the Bay of Biskay can be viewed as equivalent to a southerly displacement of its biogeographical boundary as has occurred since the 1960's in other communities.
