CLIVAR activities consist of a balanced approach between observations, modelling and theory as well as diagnostic studies (http://www.clivar.org). CLIVAR objectives in the Atlantic sector focus on improving the understanding and assessing the predictability of three climate phenomena: the North Atlantic Oscillation, the tropical Atlantic variability and the variability of the Meridional Overturning Circulation. This paper attempts to give an overview of the state-of-the-art of these Atlantic modes of variability, the ongoing and planned CLIVAR activities related to these climatic phenomena and finally the recent advances in their predictability.
