The general objective of DESAFIO is to study the flow of particulate and active carbon (the one carried out by the migrating organisms of the zooplankton and micronekton), as well as the selection of meso- and bathypelagic migrants in the area detected between the upwelling of the African coast, the oligotrophic waters of the subtropical gyre, and the Azores current, ending in the productive waters north of the Azores. The campaign design, divided in two parts, will allow studying an important variety of productive scenarios in the ocean in two seasons of the annual cycle characterized by the highest productivity in winter and oligotrophy in autumn.
