The samples were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC) and silicate concentrations. The two main water masses in the sampling area, coming from the Drake Passage and Weddell Sea, are well-defined using silicate as a tracer. The concentrations of TOC are higher than 100 μM and are associated with low silicate concentrations. However, in the deep water influenced by the Weddell Sea the concentrations of TOC are about 30 μM.
