Such an enormous mass of salty water plays a key role in regulating the balance and distribution of heat, momentum, oxygen and CO2 and, hence, in regulating climate. But the oceans are more than salty water: they host a huge and diverse biosphere that is responsible for the exchange of climatically active substances with the atmosphere. Global Change is affecting the sea’s breathing in a way which is still largely unknown. It also affects marine biodiversity and threatens the survival of ancient ecosystems and exploitable resources. Predicting not only the effects of Global Change on the oceans but also their timing and their feedback responses on climate, requires the improvement of our observational systems and the integration of observations into holistic (Earth System) research approaches [ES] Los mares antárticos: claves del pasado, interrogantes del futuro. Los paisajes del Ártico y la Antártida son, además de extraordinariamente bellos, los menos alterados por la actividad humana. Y no son irrelevantes a escala planetaria: suman el 13% de la superficie de la Tierra –extensión parecida a la de los desiertos o la tundra–, y los 32,4 millones de km3 de hielo representan el 70% del agua dulce del mundo. Sus aguas tan frías son una fuente de inspiración continua para la investigación oceanográfica, entre otros motivos porque están rebosantes de vida. Los modelos de predicción dicen que las regiones polares son unas de las más sensibles al cambio global. Según los modelos, cambiará la extensión del mar helado, la temperatura y la densidad del agua, y la exposición de los microorganismos a la radiación ultravioleta, por la ampliación del agujero de la capa de ozono. El cambio climático, por el hecho de reducir las áreas con hielo marino alrededor del continente, ya afecta las zonas de reproducción del krill, base de todas las cadenas alimenticias marinas y terrestres del ecosistema antártico, con consecuencias para la red trófica ...
