Radnor was built in 1918 by the Sun Shipbuilding Co., Chester, Pennsylvania for the Cunard Steamship Company. She was requisitioned by the Navy, May 13, 1918 and used as a cargo ship during World War I. Captain George Comer (1858-1937) served as an officer on the Radnor for several months in 1918. Comer was a sealer and whaling captain from East Haddam noted for his studies of Arctic peoples. "Julia" refers to Comer's wife, Julia Chipman Comer.
