Description
Summary:Abstract-The penetration fracture of sea ice plate floating on sea water is a complex fracture phenomenon. The paper analyses the basic aspects of fracture mechanics of the penetration problem, reviews in detail several recent solutions and presents a new improved method of solution. The basic relation between the applied load and the length of radial cracks, the mechanism that determines the number of radial cracks, and the size effect of the penetration load are discussed. Finally, a new fracture mechanics model for the ice plate penetration problem that takes into account part-through radial cracks is proposed. I.
