The author is eloquent in his descriptions of mining methods. The presence of glacial overburden and perma-frost had a profound influence in the Yukon plateau. Placer miners initially panned and worked the streams, then blasted shafts through frozen gravel and clay using steam injection points to reach the pay zone at the bedrock surface. Yukon prospectors always had to be miners as well.
