Summary: | HABIT: Herbaceous perennial with winter rosettes, vernal culms sparsely caespitose, erect or ascending, 1.5-6 dm.; flowering May-July; autumnal culms erect, branching from middle nodes, with slightly reduced ascending leaves, forming a dense tuft; flowering July- September. SIMILAR SPECIES: The genus Panicum is distinctive in Ohio. It is the largest genus in the family, and species distinctions are based upon minute and technical characters. This species is most similar to P. depauperatum, P. linearifolium, and P. calliphyllum. It has been suggested (Pohl, 1947) that this species is a hybrid between P. depauperatum and P. commutatum.
