description In ice infested area, when moving ice sheet hitting on an offshore jacket oil platform, the cyclical ice force may create and induce structure vibrations. Comparing to other environmental forces, such as wind, wave and earthquake, induced vibrations, the phenomenon o f ice induced vibrations has not been well studied. Designers of the structure could not accurately predict dynamic response of the structure under ice forces. Recent years, large scale full scale tests have been conducted on several offshore structures in Bohai Gulf in China. And, based on test data, dynamic ice force model has been developed. In 2005 REU program, the student, using developed ice force model, analyzed the dynamic response of an offshore structure. In order to optimal design ice resist structure or mitigate ice induced vibrations, a small scale test system for investigation dynamic ice structure interaction has been set up in the laboratory of Dalian University of Technology. The main target of the project is to rescale the structural model by using certain laws of similarity. The 2006 REU student will take part in the numerical simulation of small scale
