Summary: | John Bower began his fisheries career in 1986 as an NMFS observer aboard several South Korean trawlers in the Bering Sea. During 1987-89, he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines, where he first became interested in cephalopods. John completed graduate degrees at the University of Hawaii (Dept. of Oceanography) and the Hokkaido University (Faculty of Fisheries) studying two nektonic squids (Ommastrephes bartramii and Todarodes pacificus), and became an assistant professor at the Hokkaido University in 1999. During 1991-97, he participated in five cruises aboard the Hokusei Maru around the Hawaiian Islands and along 155ÂșE in the northwest Pacific.
