They are not confined to the upper part of the perm&ost zone as suggested previously in the literature and appear to be due to changes in the moisture content with time. They imply (1) that studying climatic change by monitoring ground temperatures will normally be unsuccessful unless an arid area is chosen; (2) that basing engineering designs on measurements of ground temperatures alone will be hazardous; and (3) that the ground-temperature profile with depth is an unreliable indicator of past climatic changes.
