Numerical Simulation of Sea Ice Thermodynamics-dynamics in the Bohai Sea with Discrete Element Model

Sea ice covers play an important role in the climate changing, and also bring a series engineering problems in petroleum exploitations, navigations, etc. To model the growth/decay and drifting of the sea ice under natural conditions, many numerical approaches and constitutive equations have been est...

Normally, the sea ice cover appears in discrete states either at large scales or at small scales (Overland et al., 1998; Hibler, 2001). To model the interaction of ice floes under discrete conditions, the discrete element model was applied for the sea ice dynamics (Hopkins, 1999, 2004). But the thermodynamics of sea ice was still not studied recently. In this project, the DEM will be studied to model the thermodynamics and dynamics of sea ice. In this DEM simulation, the tensional strength of frozen ice floes will also be considered. In this way, the continuum behavior of sea ice cover can also be modeled. In this project, the Discrete Element Model will be developed for the sea ice thermodynamics-dynamics, and will be applied in the sea ice simulation of the Bohai Sea, and compare the simulated results with the field observed data. The student on this study is required to know some knowledge of DEM concept, and the Fortran or C++ compiler. Text Sea ice Unknown
