The annual pup production of harp seals in the Northwest Atlantic was estimated using a combination of photographic and visual surveys flown off eastern Newfoundland (Front) and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Gulf) during March 1994. Whelping seals were dispersed into numerous concentrations, particularly at the Front and in the Northern Gulf. Pup production was estimated to be 446 700 (SE = 57 200) at the Front, 57 600 (SE = 13 700) in the northern Gulf and 198 600 (SE = 24 200) in the southern Gulf (Magdalen Islands) for a total of 702 900 (SE = 63 600). Photographic counts were corrected for misidentified pups by comparing multiple readings of photographs made by two or more readers. Estimates were also corrected for pups absent from the ice at the time of the survey using distinct age-related developmental stages.
