Sea provides major feeding habitat for various salmon stocks originating from Asia and North America. A better understanding of salmon community structure will clarify the mechanisms of salmon population response to recent environmental changes. A better understanding of salmon community structure will clarify the mechanisms of salmon population response to recent environmental changes. Chum salmon is a dominant pelagic fish in the Bering Sea during summer and fall especially after pink salmon have moved to coastal areas for spawning. The present research is designed to investigate 1) the stock composition and abundance of Asian and Alaskan chum salmon in the Bering Sea, 2) their seasonal migration route and timing, and 3) factors affecting the oceanic distribution and abundance of each regional stock. Research vessel samples collected in the Bering Sea and adjacent Pacific waters in 2002-2003 will be examined by using allozyme techniques. In addition, we will establish a chum salmon mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) baseline for the revised genetic stock identification. 2 Progress Summary: 1. Genetic stock identification of chum salmon in the Bering Sea and adjacent waters Fish samples Troll surveys were conducted at 63 stations in the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean by the research Text Bering Sea Pink salmon Unknown Bering Sea Pacific
