Description
Summary:A program for experimental fisheries for bluefin tuna within the Icelandic EEZ was initiated in 1996 and has continued annually in the autumn to the present year. The purpose of the program was to detect feeding migrations of bluefin tuna to northern areas and to detect their catchability in the area south of Iceland. The CPUE was highest in 1997, 9.5 fish/line, declined gradually to 1.4 fish/line in 2001 and increased to 3.1 fish/line in 2002. The lengths ranged from 77 to 290 cm and the average length was close to 200 cm in all years. The age ranged from 4 to 17 yrs in 1999 and 75 % of the fish were estimated 6 to 10 yrs. The size, age and condition factor did not vary throughout the operation period in any year, and a separate influx or sign of mixed origin of the fish could not be detected.
