Thus, air showers have been ob-served at the South Pole using the SPASE-2 detector, which measures the electronic component at the surface, and the AMANDA-II neutrino telescope, which measures the coincident muonic component in deep ice. These two components, together with a Monte Carlo simulation and a well-understood analysis method, yield the relative cosmic ray composition in the knee region.
