Supplemental feeding can be used in response to severe weather events such as midwinter icing or during calving when additional surveillance and nutrition may increase production. The practice of reindeer herding in Alaska is changing rapidly in response to the physical and socio-economic environment with the integration of many “cutting edge ” manage-ment technologies and the collaboration of agencies and research institutions.
