12. X-RAY MINERALOGY OF DSDP LEGS 44 AND 44A, WESTERN NORTH ATLANTIC: LOWER CONTINENTAL RISE HILLS, BLAKE NOSE, AND BLAKE-BAHAMA BASIN

Bulk samples were analyzed with an X-ray dif-fractometer in order to obtain semiquantitative determinations of the mineral composition of the sediments sampled. The analyses were performed in the manner of Cook et al., 1975. Briefly, the method was as follows. Bulk samples were washed with distilled...

Bulk samples were washed with distilled water to remove sea salts and ground to less than 10 µm under butanol. They were then treated with trihexylamine acetate to expand smectite minerals and X-rayed as random powders. Bulk samples were subjected to Cu-Kα radiation at 2° 2θ/minute.
