Summary:In light of overwhelming evidence indicating that obtaining a formal education and being engaged in school are strongly correlated with health (Raphael, 1996; Nutbeam et al., 1993), as well as social and economic well-being (Radwanski, 1987), educational disengagement among Aboriginal students has become a pressing health and development issue in Canada. It was mentioned in the 2002 Speech from the Throne, the most enduring contribution Canada can make to First Nations is to raise the standard of education on reserves and to improve the educational outcomes1 of First Nation people. This paper provides the background for an
