Immediately after his discovery of some ISLANDS off the coast of the mainland, his sponsors Ferdinand and Isabella, petitioned the Pope to give them not only the ISLANDS which Columbus had discovered but the still undiscovered MAINLAND!! By coincidence it just so happened that a Spanish Pope by the name of Rodrigo Borgia was the head of the church of Rome at that time. He drew a line from the North Pole to the South just west of Africa (Cape Verde Islands) and he gave everything WEST of that line to the Spanish.
