PROGRESSIVE CHEMICAL VARIATION IN A THOLEIITIC LAVA SEQUENCE AT KAP STOSCH

The lavas of a 350 m section of Tertiary plateau basalt from Kap Stosch are described. The section lies near the geographical centre of the northern lava plateau in East Greenland, and it covers half of the estimated total thickness of the entire sequence. The basalts are low-alumina, high-iron tholeiitic lavas and closely resemble those which form the plateau south of Scoresby Sund, but probably came from an isolated body in the lower crust.
