Description
Summary:ABSTRACT. Tn the foreland of the V es tari-Hagafell sjokull glacier, L a ngajokull, central I celand, three scales of subglacia l b ed forms a re fo und: drumlins, flutes and lin eations. The sma ll er bed forms arc superimposed upon the large r. These three bed forms pro ba bl y form ed as a res ult of the presence ofa ri gid suhglacial core producin g a lee-sid e low-press ure a rea into whi ch sed.iment f1 O\ ~ 'e d a nd coll ec ted. The cores of th e drumlins a re tumuli (Ia \'a blisters), w hilst the cores of the flutes and lineati ons we re large c1 asts. Differences between the th ree scales of bed form s a re tha t: (a) the fl u tes and lineations a re far more mo bil e fea tures as their cores could move within the d eforming la ye r, whilst th e drumlin bedrock cores wen; fi xed; (b) th e lin eati ons formed in associa tio n with a clast pavement. The cha nge in scale o f the bed forms m a y be related to cha nges in thickness of th e deforming layer and size o f th e co re. At this sit e, sma ll er bed form s were superimposed upon la rger bed forms a nd these may h a \'e form ed as th e d eforming layer progressive ly thinned in associa ti on with glacial retrea t.
