Summary:There is presently an ongoing dispute regarding the fishing of mackerel in the North East Atlantic (NEA) amongst the Coastal States. The current crisis erupted in 2009 after the Faeroe Islands withdrew from the mackerel management agreement in response to Iceland’s increasing mackerel catch. The level of autonomous quotas set by both Iceland and the Faeroe Islands since have been strongly challenged by both the EU and Norway.
