The Southern Tasmanian Natural Resource region has a land area of 25,500 square kilometres, which is 38 per cent of the total state area and largest land area of all three natural resource management regions in Tasmania. The region has a coastline length of 1900 kilometres, which is 39 per cent of the Tasmanian coastline and is also the longest natural resource management coastline in the state, (Inspiring Place et al 2002). The population of the region is approximately 229,256 and is heavily centred on the state’s capital city, Hobart The region is comprised of twelve local government areas and includes coastal water jurisdiction and off shore islands such as Bruny Island, Maria Island and the sub Antarctic
