The measurement of sea ice distribution over time in Storfjorden sound, lying between the islands Spitsbergen and Edgeøya in the Svalbard archipelago, is of scientific interest to various inter-related disciplines. The most effective way to measure sea ice distribution is use satellite data. ENVISAT wide swath scenes over Storfjorden were obtained during April 2004 in conjunction with co-incident ground truth observations. However to obtain the maximum amount of information from the satellite data, the data must first be calibrated. Presented in this paper is a method of deriving backscatter-corrected images using the B.E.S.T software. 1.
