The Active Microwave Instrument on board ERS has two modes; SAR and When the is not an imaging mode, it allows data to be acquired when direct SAR is not possible, or when the receiving station is inoperable. advances in image generation from Scatterometer data enable medium-scale resolution images to be made from the 1 mode data during times when SAR images cannot be acquired. Together, these combined C-band microwave image data for the first time enable uninterrupted coverage of this geographic region at both high and medium-scale (-12 km) resolut.
