Possible reasons for excesses at these sites are discussed, but it seems most likely they are related to small number variation. The aetiology of salivary gland malignancy is generally unknown, although exposure to ionizing radiation has been identified as a risk factor in humans (Modan et al., 1974; Hempelmann et al., 1975; Takeichi et al., 1976; National Academy of Sciences, 1980).
