Description
Summary:A routine production of Surface Solar Irradiance (SSI) fields will be made in the preoperational phase (1997-2001) of the EUMETSAT Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (O&SI SAF). This production will be made by the O&SI SAF "Low and Mid Latitudes " at Météo-France/CMS in Lannion and by the O&SI SAF "High Latitudes " which includes the Norwegian and Danish Meteorological Institutes (DNMI and DMI) under DNMI's responsibility. This project includes: 1) The calculation of daily SSI over the Northern and Southern areas of the Atlantic (above 50N and below 50S) at a 10 km resolution from the NOAA AVHRR data. This will be made once a day under the responsibility of DNMI. 2) The calculation of GOES-8 and MSG derived SSI fields on a hourly basis. This will be made from 60N to 60S under the responsibility of CMS. However only the 50N to 50S band data will be actually used and disseminated. The 50N to 60N and 50S to 60S areas will be covered only for inter-comparison with the AVHRR derived high latitude SSI fields. In a further step the hourly fields will be averaged to produce three-hourly and daily SSI fields
