S-a analizat spectrul trofic al speciei M. batrachocephalus şi variaţiile acestuia în sectorul Agigea-Eforie Nord al Mării Negre. Indicele de importanţă relativă a indicat un mod de hrănire generalist. Această specie se hrăneşte în principal cu bivalve, peşti, amfipode şi izopode.
