Definite ankylosing spondylitis was observed in 0.07 % of the Iraqi population. A clinical study of 53 patients (47 males and 6 females) with definite ankylosing spondylitis was carried out. The arthritic manifestations of the disease are similar to those of European patients but iritis is seen less frequently in our patients. The histocompatibility antigen HL-A B27 was found in 21 of 25 spondylitic patients, while it was found in only two out of 95 normal controls. ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS is comparatively infrequent in European and white American populations. Kellgren (1964) estimated a mean prevalence of 0.1-0.2 % in Great Britain. A similar prevalence was encountered in the U.S.A. by Stecher (1957). In a survey of a population of Haida Indians in British Columbia, Robinson, Gofton and Price (1963) found spondylitis in 4 % of males. Similar differences between spondylitics and controls have been found in the incidence of the histocompatibility antigen B27 in different populations.
