New sea routes and shipping lanes in the North, as well as development of Arctic resources (especially oil and gas) make the region more attractive to global actors. The increasing importance of the Arctic in international affairs requires effective governance that can preserve the High North from a potential conflict and competition among the stakehold‑ ers. This article examines the nature and the scope of governance in the Arctic and shows a large spectrum of possible Arctic governance frameworks. It is con‑ cluded by a series of recommendations for good governance and cooperation in the North.
