Advancement of smoltification in atlantic salmon (salmo salar l.) by salinity treatment : a tools for biological management in land based farming

At favourable environmental conditions there is no apparent need for biological management in traditional cage salmon rearing. Even if in such cases growth performances are often far from optimal the fact remains that today they have the lowest production cost. Land based systems require considerabl...

Land based systems require considerable investment and energy inputs to create optimal growing conditions. The following main conclusions can be drawn from the results obtained in this study : external salinity can advance development of hypoosmoregulation by several months without loss of growth potential in the sea photoperiodic changes are not a prerequisite for development of hypoosmoregulation salinity - induced hypoosmoregulaton is dependent on season.
