The weakening of the city's foundations, as the result of the Kiirunavaara underground’s extension, forced decision-makers to act the city's displacement during the 21st century. The objective of this article is to highlight the perception of Kiruna as an “empty land” before its erection, while the territory was occupied, including by representations and ways of dwelling leading to place-attachment. By showing unequal power relations leading to the prioritization of certain values rather than others and the renewal of historical dominations (of women, nature or indigenous peoples), the process of displacement of the city of Kiruna makes it possible to question the ideological background of a history that tends towards “progress”.
