Potential field methods applied to the quantification of the magnetization of the first oceanic litospheres
This thesis focuses on the quantitative analysis of potential field methods applied to the interpretation of the magnetic anomalies’ sources. It focuses on the conjugate magma-poor rifted margins of Australia and Antarctica. First, the application of potential field methods operators on gravimetric...

It focuses on the conjugate magma-poor rifted margins of Australia and Antarctica. First, the application of potential field methods operators on gravimetric and magnetic maps highlights common sources for both gravimetric and magnetic anomalies Also, modelling and inversion computations question the nature of the magnetic anomalies sources for these margins, which are usually interpreted as Earth’s magnetic field reversals (EMFR). The most proximal magnetic anomalies are linked to a magnetic “edge effect” whereas most of the other anomalies are linked to topographic variations of the basement top, constituted of serpentinized mantle. Only the most distal anomalies seem to be linked to Earth’s magnetic field reversals. Therefore, the results of this thesis strongly question the kinematic models based only on EMFR.
