International audience Les recueils de tradition orale du Groenland oriental témoignent des valeurs et du mode de vie d’une culture ancienne. Après un aperçu des récits et du rôle de l’oralité au Groenland, l’ouvrage présente quelques contes filmés auprès d’Esajas Kuuitse, conteur renommé au Groenland oriental. La langue des contes est le tunumiisut qui appartient au continuum dialectal inuit. La gestuelle accompagnant les récits est une part essentielle de l’art de conter. La description des gestes d’un des contes permet de révéler les différentes manifestations de la communication orale dans le déroulement du récit. Tous les textes sont traduits en français et en anglais. Collections of traditional East Greenlandic oral texts are laden with the values and way of life of a disappearing culture. This work gives an overview of Greenlandic literature, introduces the reader to the place of storytelling in that culture, and pre- sents some tales told by Esajas Kuuitse, a renowned East Greenlandic storyteller, on a video recording. These tales are in the Tunumiisut language which is part of the Inuit dialect continuum. The gestures that accompany tales are an essential part of the art of storytelling. An analysis of the teller’s gestures during one of the tales presented here sheds light on a wide range of features of oral communication. All Inuit texts are translated into both French and English.
