Setting of an experimental device for behavioural study of young stages of fish: description of behaviour and substrate choice of the biological model Acipenser baerii

This work aims to develop a tool which makes it possible to approach the conditions met in the natural environment for the autoecologic study of the young stages of fish. This study was carried out with a biological model Acipenser baerii, because of disponibility and practical reasons. The experime...

This study was carried out with a biological model Acipenser baerii, because of disponibility and practical reasons. The experimental structure (SCOLA) makes up of 2 parallel observation channels connected by turns. Flow, light and substrate are controlled. The SCOLA is not partitioned what authorizes free circulation of fish, and facilitates the description of drift phenomena. The size of the channels also allows the accurate observation of the substrates and the location of the larvae on the bottom. The results achieved on the biological model Acipenser baerii confirm the described behavioral characteristics in rearing structures, with 2 well identified steps, pelagic then benthic. This tool is thus well adapted for behavioral and habitat studies of sturgeon larvae. With some modifications, the operational field of the SCOLA can be extended to other fish species.
