The use of clove oil as an anesthetic for atlantic salmon smolts (Salmo salar L.) and comparison of its effects with those of 2-phenoxyethanol

National audience Clove oil appeared to be a good anesthetic for atlantic salmon smolts, more efficient than 2-phenoxyethanol because acting at lower concentrations. Furthermore, it presents a larger safety margin, allowing longer exposure to anesthetic. Recovery times of fish anesthetised with clove oil are markedly higher than with 2-phenoxyethanol.Optimum concentrations allowing handling fish, measuring, weighting and marking with Pit-Tag are between 1.7 and 2.35.10(-4) mol.L-1 i.e. 0.3 mL and 0.4 mL of clove oil (90% eugenol) for 10 L. of water. Because clove oil is not well soluble at water temperature less than 15degreesC, it must be dissolved in ethanol at a ratio 1:10/clove oil:ethanol. Cette étude révèle que l'huile de clou de girofle est un bon anesthésique pour les smolts de saumon atlantique, plus performant que le 2-phénoxyéthanol car agissant pour de plus faibles concentrations. Elle présente de plus un facteur de sécurité plus élevé, permettant notamment des temps d'exposition à l'anesthésique plus importants. Le temps de recouvrement de la position d'équilibre est toutefois nettement plus long chez les poissons anesthésiés avec l'huile de clou de girofle.
