It introduces the different Komi ethnographic groups, the Permiaks and the Izhma Komi and afterwards concentrates on the Zyrian, on their contacts with the Russian world and on these contacts’ influence on the Komi’s way of life, especially the area’s early evangelisation, and the emergence of an intelligentsia earlier than in the rest of the Finno-Ugric world. I comment upon the role of Ivan Kuratov, Georgi Lytkin and Kallistrat Zhakov. This period is followed by the Soviet period, whose main change was Komi autonomy. The repressions ended these endeavours and stroke particularly hard the non-Russian regions. But life went on: the Komi had to adapt, while after World War II demographic trends and new school regulations changed the linguistic situation. The article concludes with some reflexions on nowadays perspectives. Cet article général entend situer les Komis dans la famille finno-ougrienne et donner un aperçu de leurs caractéristiques, permettant au lecteur de replacer les informations contenues dans les communications suivantes dans leur contexte.
