Summary: | This thesis deals with the ground thermal regime and specific reference is made to the occurrence of Permafrost. Consideration is given to the thermal characteristics of soils in that various methods for determining the specific heat and the thermal conductivity of soils are reviewed. The methods presented for determing these soil characteristics were chosen because they represent traditional, present, and future methods for determining the characteristics. An examination is then made of various factors which affect the ground thermal regime in Permafrost regions. Consideration is given to such items as air temperature, topography, water, vegetation, and climate. Some papers are reviewed which discuss these factors and an attempt is made to present general relationships between these factors and the ground thermal regime in Permafrost regions. |
