In this interview Dr. Kelly discusses his one-year deployment experience to Antarctica in 1960 and 1961 as part of Operation Deep Freeze at Hallett Station, Antarctica. Dr. Kelly was a young Navy lieutenant straight out of his internship sent to Hallett Station to be the officer in charge (OIC) and medical officer for this scientific research station. The mission of the Navy personnel at Hallett Station was to provide logistical support for the scientific personnel doing research in Antarctica. Unique to this experience was the fact that Dr. Kelly was to winter over in Antarctica and that posed many challenges for him and the men he was responsible for. Dr. Kelly describes the tenuous relationship he had with the scientific leader also stationed at Hallett Station and how he overcame his problems with him to continue to provide support for the station and care for his men. Dr. Kelly concludes his interview by saying the biggest lesson he learned during this year was humility.
