Mark Johnson, PhD Abstract: The eight members of the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps who have received the Medal of Honor received a boost in publicity when Korean War-era Chaplain Emil Kaupan received America’s highest award for valor in April 2013. However, there are many more members of the Chaplain Corps that have been honored for combat valor than just the corps’ eight Medal of Honor recipients. Something that is lacking in the archives of the Chaplain Corps is an authoritative list of Chaplain Corps recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star. This article is a first step toward rectifying that shortcoming. What follows is a narrative that provides information on the status of research and highlights some notable recipients, a table that details the number of awards received by conflict, and a by-name list of award recipients. Who Takes Care of the Chaplain? Examining Chaplain Wellness Abstract: CH (MAJ) James F. Fisher, Jr., Ph.D., addresses caring for the chaplain and examines overall chaplain wellness. As frontline caregivers, chaplains must be well to provide vital spiritual care to all Army personnel. Wellness is a holistic approach to care, including both the physical and the spiritual. The article seeks to underscore the need to care for chaplains, to define wellness and offer means to measure wellness. Physical wellness is generally evaluated by various means of medical tests and instruments. Spiritual wellness is more abstract. However, the author offers six means of measuring spiritual wellness: (1) self-search; (2) marital monitoring; (3) communal camaraderie; (4) pastoral peers; (5) discipling directors; and (6) investigative instruments. The author correlates his Ph.D. quantitative research on pastoral wellness with chaplaincy wellness by sharing the relationship between selected disciplines of physical wellness and spiritual wellness.
