In the story this seaman appears as David, a somewhat adventurous man in his mid-thirties who makes the fateful decision to strike out on this venture in spite of a premonition that he may not return. His premonition derives from his fear of going down in a storm, for he knows the gross number of vessels that are lost each season in the Bering Sea. The terrible irony is, of course, that he doesn't di e at sea, going down in a disastrous storm, but rather he meets his fate one seemingly innocent night while in port.
