Without a diploma, the dropout faces unemployment or low-paying job and may experience feelings of inferiority and alienation. Considering the tragic circumstances of dropping out, preventative action within the schools is not only desirable but essential. This project addresses and targets specifically the dropout problem in Iceland. The program presented herein attempts to provide at-risk students with a support system to keep them in school. This program is designed for 10th grader students in Iceland when they are at crossroads in choosing their educational career. The program is comprised of two simultaneous support systems: group counseling and mentors. Participants will experience the helpful dynamics of a group of peers and at the same time they will meet weekly with their mentors. The program will facilitate students to make decisions about further education and identify their interests, abilities and skills. California State University, Northridge. Department of Education.
