“Lapps, finns, gypsies, jews, and idiots”? modernity and the use of statistical categories in Sweden

RésuméCet article se penche sur les catégories utilisées dans les statistiques de la population suédoise pour montrer comment ces catégories devinrent un élément du développement social et comment la « modernité » a contribué à structurer les séries de données. Tandis que les statistiques les plus anciennes portaient l’essentiel de leur attention sur les aspects démographiques, il fallut patienter pour que l’intérêt précoce pour les populations ne relevant pas de l’église d’Etat se transforme en un désir de cibler des groupes particuliers tels que les Lapons (Saamis), les Finnois, les Gitans, les Juifs et les déficients mentaux. Les arguments et les critères utilisés pour définir ces catégories dévoilent des motivations variées allant des intérêts économiques au souci de la race. Les fluctuations chronologiques dans les modes d’argumentation et l’usage des catégories indiquent à quel point le projet de construction d’une société moderne (avec sa définition évolutive) a pu peser dans ce processus de catégorisation, ce dernier étant perçu comme partie intégrante des moyens susceptibles d’y aboutir. This article explores categories used in Swedish population statistics to gain insight into how the choice of these categories became a part of social developments and how "modernity" has helped shape statistical data collection. While the earliest statistics were mainly concerned with demographic variables, the early interest in those not belonging to the state church later developed into an interest in singling out groups such as the Saami, Finns, gypsies, Jews and the mentally deficient. The arguments used in defining these categories and determining who should be included reveal motivations ranging from economics to race. The shifts in argumentation and use of terminology over time suggest the scope of the impact of the modern project. These categories formed an integral part of the means used to reach the goals of what was defined as modern society.
