Die Dissertation gliedert sich in mehrere Teile. Der historische Teil zeigt die Chronologie der Eishochwasser an Oder und Elbe von 1700 bis heute und vergleicht die Ursachen von damals mit heute. Im meteorologischen Teil werden die Einflüsse der Großwetterlagen und der Nordatlantischen Oszillation auf Eishochwasser untersucht mit dem Ziel, diese vorherzusagen. Im Gefährdungsteil wird das Bilden eines Eishochwassers dokumentiert, beginnend mit dem Eisbildungsprozess, dem Eisdickenwachstum, der fortschreitenden Eisstandsgrenze und den Eisversetzungen. Daraus ergeben sich starke Wasserstandsanstiege. Diese werden begünstigt durch bewachsene Vorländer, enge Brückenöffnungen, Sandbänke, Einengungen des Abflussprofils, verringertes Gefälle und durch die Tide. Aufgrund dieser Ursachen werden die Deiche, Hochwasserschutzanlagen und andere Bauwerke in den Flüssen gefährdet und geschädigt. Im letzten Teil wird auf die Bekämpfung von Eishochwassern durch Eisbrecher eingegangen. The thesis is divided into several parts. The historical part shows the chronology of the ice floods on Oder and Elbe from 1700 to today and compares the causes of then and now. The meteorological part of the influences of weather situations for Greater Europe and the North Atlantic Oscillation are examined for ice floods with the aim of predicting them. In the third part the hazard of making an ice flood is documented, starting with the process of ice forming, growth of the ice thickness, moving forwards of the ice frontier and the blockage through the ice. This results in high water levels rise. These are favored by vegetation on the banks, narrow bridge openings, sandbanks, narrowing of the outflow profile, reduced gradient and by the Tide. Because of these reasons the dikes, flood control facilities and other structures and buildings are endangered and damaged. The last part deals with the fight against ice floods through icebreakers.
