The article is a short comment to a previous one (in Genus 2/07) on the theme of gender equality in planning. Planning for the redevelopment of Kiruna, due to changes of the pit, is in focus as well as attempts to make the new process more gender sensitive. In my comments, it is argued that the first article illustrates what can be referred to as “genus light”. For instance, men and women are described as if they have different needs that the planning should meet. My argument is that this is not in line with the overall goal of the Swedish government to reach equal opportunity. Instead, the different traditional experiences of women and men should be in focus. It is also said that the more women in the planning process is the main approach to create more gender sensitive planning. This is a simplification of power relations in the planning process, I argue. A more thorough analysis is needed, and some examples are given to avoid “gender light”.
