This paper attempts to examine the early period of the Norse settlement of Greenland and Vinland by comparing descriptions of the colonies contained in sagas to the historic and archaeological record. Through these comparisons, it is hoped that a richer and more complete picture of the events will unfold. In particular, the study looks at the exploration and settlement of Greenland and Vinland and the resulting cultures. It then focuses on the relationships that the Norse living in Greenland and Vinland developed with the prehistoric Native Americans of Eastern Canada and the continental Europeans. Finally, the paper attempts to explain how the Norse Greenland culture developed living on the frontier between the cultures of the New and Old Worlds. Thesis (B.?.) Honors College
