Description
Summary:Letters written to A.W. Soare (Bert) from Uncle Fred Smith, Captain Holt's Party, V.J. MacGillycuddy-Constable N.W.M. Police, F.W. White-North-West Mounted Police-Office of the Comptroller and W. Davis Burlinson. In 1898 Fred Smith left the force to seek his fortune in the gold fields of the Yukon. He was grubstaked (funded for a share of the profits) by a syndicate from Yorkshire headed by his nephew W. Davis Burlinson, a stockbroker. The nature of the letters are sympathy and explanation to the family following his death in Athabaska Landing, as well as a follow-up letter lamenting the ""splendid chances thrown away"" with Mr. Smith's death. 16 pages
